This is an article of a series we dedicated to beautiful Greece. In this one, we will bring you on a dreaming sail trip around the wonderful Kefalonia island.
If you want to know more about sailing the greek sea, don’t forget to read the other articles we dedicated to it: Athens and the Ionian Islands
All of us when thinking of the Greek islands we imagine a very common profile made by white houses with flat roofs, villages perched on a cliff where elderly residents rest in the shade of old pergolas, ancient vestiges of Ancient Greece temples and buildings.
The reality is, fortunately, quite different. This country is in fact made up of about 6 thousand islands divided into nine archipelagos and each one has its own history, its culture, and even its own aspect.
Kefalonia is the best place to realize the difference between tourist representation and reality. The largest of the Ionian islands offers probably little from a historical-cultural point of view and a lot, instead, from a naturalistic point of view.
OUR TOP SELECTION OF CREWED BOATS FOR THE IONIAN ISLANDS:
- Lagoon 620 in Preveza, Ionian Islands
- Sunseeker 70 in Corfu, Greece
- Bali 5.4 in Lefkas, Ionian Islands
- Catamaran Caribe 69 in Corfu
It is precisely these factors, beaches, sea, and mountains that have made Kefalonia famous and have allowed its population to thrive.
Where is Kefalonia, the most wanted location for summer 2021?
This Greek island is located in the Ionian Sea, the sea that separates the Greek coasts from those of southern Italy. Together with Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu, Lefkada, and Paxi, it is part of the major islands of the Ionian archipelago and is also the largest.
It is possible to reach it from the mainland via various daily ferries or by plane via a convenient airport on which it is possible to land after about an hour of flight from Athens.
What are the best beaches in Kefalonia?
With its coastline made up of over 200 kilometers, Kefalonia is a real paradise for sea lovers and is simply perfect as a destination for a trip on a sailing boat or on a yacht.
Below we suggest you 3 beaches that really deserve a stop during a sea trip:
Myrthos Beach:
Myrthos is counted among the 30 most beautiful beaches in the world. It is the symbol of the island of Kefalonia but it is also one of the most famous Greek beaches. It is located in the Pylaros region, in the north-west of the island, and is a white pebble beach surrounded by green hills and a sea that ranges from electric blue to turquoise.
Antisamos Beach:
This very popular beach has a wild scenery of unique beauty and it is no coincidence that it has often been the set of movies set in Greece. White pebbles and crystal clear sea here too.
Xi beach:
Xi beach is a very special beach made of red sand, about 3 km long and framed by clay cliffs.
It is located southwest of the island of Kefalonia, in the Paliki region. Xi beach owes its name to the letter of the Greek alphabet that distinguishes it since it remembers its shape. Here you will find a sea that never gets very deep.
Not only seas and beaches in Kefalonia:
If sea and beach life tends to get you tired after a while, don’t worry! There are many activities that can be carried out in Kefalonia. For example by visiting its centers and villages.
First of all Argostoli, the coastal city and capital of the island is full of shops and bars where you can spend a happy afternoon. If you are lucky enough, in the morning or late afternoon you can meet the Caretta caretta turtles here on the hunt for food! An encounter for which it is certainly worth navigating up to here!
Also, the small village of Assos is worth a visit. This tiny village is located in the northwest of the island, along the Erissos peninsula. It is a small fishing village that has only recently opened up to tourism. By visiting it you will be able to immerse yourself in a more realistic atmosphere of life in Kefalonia.
Finally, we point out the caves of Melissani and Drogarati, two natural charming caves that now can be visited by special boats.
The first, Melissani, was only discovered in 1951 and houses a lake of half fresh and half saltwater as well as an infinite series of stalactites and stalagmites.
The second, Drogarati, is divided into two areas. One, smaller, renamed “royal balcony”, houses an infinity of translucent stalactites; the other, known instead as the “apotheosis room” is a real natural amphitheater with excellent acoustics.
