The British Virgin Islands is a paradisiacal archipelago made up of around 40 islands, some of them small, with white sand beaches, peaceful bays, and rich in marine life.

Located east of Puerto Rico, they are formally part of the United Kingdom and should not be confused with the US Virgin Islands, another group of very close islands, part of the United States.

The trade winds guarantee the BVI’s acceptable temperatures for most of the year and this is one of the main reasons why they are frequented by sailing enthusiasts from all over the world who find here the ideal conditions to practice their beloved sport. Even diving lovers find ideal conditions in this corner of Caribbean paradise. It is really impossible not to be fascinated by the thousands of colorful fish that can be encountered swimming among its coral reefs.

When will your BVIs yacht vacation take place?

In the British Virgin Islands, the sun shines all year round. Temperatures during the day range between 22 and 31 degrees and drop to 20 during the night. The presence of trade winds guarantees acceptable temperatures during all seasons even if the most pleasant heat is perceived in the months from December to March, while the most sultry (around 28 degrees) hits from May to October. Short rains, on the other hand, can happen from March to October. Therefore, the best time to visit the British Virgin Islands ranges from December to April, when it is hot but not too sultry. However, as we have said, it is not of fundamental importance.

That said, it goes without saying that booking a trip during the so-called high season (December – April) will result in higher rental fees while doing so during less touristy periods can mean better conditions and discounts.

Further discounts are also available by booking well in advance, with offers that can reach up to 20% on the full price.

Likewise, choosing a last-minute booking, i.e. within 3 weeks of the departure date, can be a good way to save up to 30% on the list price. However, in this case, there is generally little choice regarding boat type and accommodation on board.

What kind of boat do you need?

This question could also become: “How many people will be on board?”

It is not difficult to understand that depending on the number of guests, a different type of boat is required. This will have a significant impact on the amount of the cost because generally, a higher boat type equates to a higher charter rate.

Not of secondary importance are your needs, both in terms of comfort and personal pleasure.

In general, there are three main types of boats, as follows:

  • Motor yacht
  • Catamaran
  • Monohull

Normally, motor yachts are the most expensive boats, followed by catamarans and sailing boats. The average weekly rental price of a medium-sized boat is between 2,000 and 3,000 dollars per day, depending on its size and whether it is a motor or sailing boat.

Finally, it is important to consider that, for the same size, a newly built boat will have a higher rental cost than an older one, with price differences that can sometimes be quite significant.

Will you be sailing alone or with a crew onboard?

Choosing whether or not to have a crew on board depends primarily on your nautical skills and the degree of experience you got.

It goes without saying that if you have never been at sea or almost and, above all, if you do not have at least one person with a boat license, you will need to rely on a skipper to steer the boat and manage maneuvers at sea and in marinas. The average daily cost of a skipper in the BVI’s is around $ 150.

Deciding to have a crew on board, in addition to the skipper, instead guarantees the highest standards in terms of comfort but also higher costs based on the number of people required and their different qualifications (hostess, chef, personal trainer, etc.)

In general, the possibility of self-steering a boat is only possible for small or medium-sized sailboats or catamarans. This is because, as a rule, for large motor yachts or catamarans brokers require a crew on board even if you are an expert sailor.

What will be your BVIs spots itinerary?

The cost of a nautical charter in the British Virgin Islands can vary considerably depending on the islands you intend to visit, their distance from your embarkation port and, not to be underestimated, the presence or absence of important dive sites or tourist attractions.

This broadly means that a 14-day itinerary spent sailing around a single island could have a lower cost than another, shorter itinerary that winds between multiple destinations far from each other.

What costs are included and what is not in the charter fee?

Finally, it is good to clarify what is included and what is not when it comes to understanding a charter boat price.

The price of renting a yacht with a crew usually includes the use of the boat for the agreed period and the service offered by the crew.

This figure almost never includes the so-called A.P.A. (advance provisioning allowance), i.e. a lump sum payment that covers all onboard expenses necessary during the charter of the yacht such as fuel, ports, food, drinks, etc.

Another separate cost concerns the VAT which is usually to be considered separately from the indicated rent.
