The Grenadines, also called the Grenadine Islands, are a chain of about 600 islands and islets located in the southeastern part of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies.
They extend over a vast area straddling the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, for a length of over 100 kilometers southwest from the island of Saint Vincent to Grenada. Administratively, the Grenadines are divided into two different states. The northernmost group is part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, while the southern islands are a dependency of the state of Grenada. The Saint Vincent group is made up of Bequia, Canouan, Mayreau, Mustique, Union Island, and the associated islets. Carriacou Island, the largest of the Grenada group, has an area of only 34 square kilometers.

The Grenadines
This area is mainly famous among those who like to spend the winter traveling on their yacht, among the aristocracy and VIPs, and not very frequented by mass tourism.
The Grenadine islands look almost like wading stones placed between the major Saint Vincent and Grenada and are surrounded by coral reefs and clear blue waters, ideal for diving, snorkeling, and boating. The inhabited islands are just over a dozen, and these too are sparsely populated and underdeveloped. Despite this, some islands of the Grenadines, such as Mustique and Palm Island, are frequented by the rich and famous; others, such as Bequia and Union Island, particularly attract sailing enthusiasts.
The best way to get to the Grenadines is by air. However, to get here, at least one stopover is required: there are no direct flights and connections are only with neighboring islands such as Saint Lucia, Barbados, and Martinique. The reference airport for the archipelago is in Kingstown, St Vincent.
What is the cost of a charter boat holiday in the Grenadines? This is a complex question that is not easy to answer if you do not know the different factors that affect the final price.
What costs are included and what is not in the charter fee?
The price of chartering a yacht with a crew usually includes the use of the boat for the agreed period and the crew service. When renting a boat, you must always consider the supply costs, the so-called APA (advance provisioning allowance).
It is a lump sum payment that covers all of your onboard expenses during your yacht charter like fuel, ports, food, drinks, etc.). Another cost concern the VAT which is usually to be considered separately from the indicated rental cost.
What kind of boat do you need?
Obviously, a higher kind of boat corresponds to a higher charter fee.
Of course, according to the number of guests who get on board, you will need a different kind of boat and this will highly affect the price.
The type of boat you want to charter must meet your needs, both in terms of comfort and in terms of space required.
In general, there are three main types of boat, as follows:
- Motor yacht
- Catamaran
- Sailboat
It may seem obvious, but much of the cost incurred for renting a boat (anywhere in the world) depends on the type, size, and age of the vessel you want to rent.
In general, we can say that motor yachts are the most expensive boats, followed by catamarans and then sailboats. The average weekly rental price for a medium-sized catamaran is between 2,000 and 3,000 euros per day, based on its size and whether it is a power or sailing catamaran.
Finally, it is important to consider that, for the same size, a newly built boat will have a higher rental cost than one that is already dated, with price differences that can sometimes be quite significant.
Will you be sailing alone or with a crew onboard?
The choice of whether to have a crew onboard or not and, if so, what kind of it, is a crucial aspect that affects the charter final cost.
Basically, it depends on two main factors. The first concerns whether whoever hires the boat owns a nautical license. The second is instead linked to the size of the chartered boat.
Generally, self-steering a boat is allowed only for small sailboats or catamarans. This is because, as a rule, for larger size boats brokers require a crew on board even if you are an experienced sailor (even if only a skipper).
If you do not have a skipper license or in any case you do not want to be engaged in the vessel navigation, you will have to budget a fixed daily amount for a skipper and (if necessary) an on-board crew who takes care of the management of the boat at sea and in port.
What will be your Grenadines Islands itinerary?
The Grenadines mainly attract high-end international tourists looking for perfect snorkeling spots and high-profile services. Here nature offers memorable scenarios for a dream vacation. Examples are the island of Bequia, which prides itself on its wide choice of beaches, or the small and delightful Tobago Cays, uninhabited and protected by a marine park. Places it’s easy to fall in love with. Then there are the mythical places like Mustique, a private island where Mick Jagger and Kate Middleton and other famous people seem to have their home.
The main town is the city of Kingston, the capital of Saint Vincent. Here you will find the usual catalog of colonial buildings lined up along the cobblestone streets while Fort Charlotte dominates everything, protecting the city from above. However, Kingstown remains a small town where you can still breathe a placid and relaxed atmosphere typical of the West Indies.
Those who choose these places, however, do so essentially to navigate between one island and another of the Grenadines which, without a doubt, are the real reason why this archipelago is famous around the world. The island group consists of Mustique, Mayreau, Canouan, Bequia, Palm Island, Union Island, and the Tobago Cays. Some of these islands, such as Mustique and Palm Island, are privately owned. Mustique is probably the most exclusive place, frequented by movie stars and famous people from all over the world. On the island, there are several villas and a hotel. In the 1960s, the Queen of England and her crowned heads came here. It is now easier to find rock stars and footballers.
The tiny Palm Island is home to a small resort that is open to the moneyed public looking for beautiful beaches while the small uninhabited islands that make up the Tobago Cays are set in a marine park, with shallow turquoise waters and white sand beaches, ideal for swimming.
Fascinating Bequia is a much-loved destination for those who travel on large yachts in search of the beauty of nature and to enjoy the beaches surrounded by the palette of bougainvillea. The perfect place if you are looking for a quiet atmosphere, away from any kind of stress.
When will your Grenadines yacht vacation take place?
The Grenadines climate is tropical, hot, and humid all year round, with a relatively cool and dry season from January to mid-April, and a hot, muggy, and rainiest season from June to December. In the cool and dry period, the north-east trade winds blow with constancy and moderate intensity, while in the warmer period the winds are more irregular, and can have breaks, increasing the sensation of mugginess. Between mid-April and late May, before the hottest and rainiest season, both the temperature and the frequency of thunderstorms gradually increase.
The rains occur throughout the year especially in the form of showers or thunderstorms, perhaps intense, but which generally do not last long, and therefore soon give way to the sun, even if sometimes a more intense wave of bad weather can occur.
The rains are abundant, especially on the main islands such as St Vincent and Grenada were on average almost 2,000 mm of rainfall per year, of which more than 200 mm from June to November.
The smaller islands, on the other hand, are a little less rainy, since they receive less than 1,500 millimeters per year.
The greatest danger comes from tropical storms and hurricanes in the Caribbean area, which can occur from June to November, although they are more likely from August to October. However, the Grenadines are located in the southernmost part of the hurricane belt, which therefore tends to lap their shores more rarely than in the rest of the Caribbean.
The best time for a boat trip is therefore from February to April, the least rainy period of the year and which does not present the risk of hurricanes.
It is clear that booking a trip during the so-called high season (February – April) will result in higher rental commissions while doing so during less touristy periods can mean better conditions and discounts.
Early booking offers are also a good choice to save money. By booking in large advance you can save up to 20% on the full price.
Similarly, choosing a last-minute booking, i.e. within 3 weeks from the departure date, can be a good way to save up to 30% of the list price. However, in this case, there is generally little choice as to the type of boat and accommodation on board.
