Polynesia is made up of 118 islands divided into 5 archipelagos. For those who decide to visit these French tropical islands for the first time, the dilemma is only which one to choose between paradisiacal beaches, places for excursions and diving, and Polynesian culture.
French Polynesia is located in the middle of the South Pacific and occupies an area as large as the European continent. This Pacific area is 5 hours by plane from New Zealand, the closest point of reference for the Polynesian islands.

The capital of French Polynesia is the city of Papeete, located on the island of Tahiti, where all international flights arrive.
Starting from Europe, the easiest way to reach Polynesia is to travel with the airlines that make the connection from Paris. However, it is a 12-hour flight from Paris to Los Angeles and another 8 hours to Papeete, not counting the time of stopovers.
Distance is perhaps the only real reason why these islands are still little frequented by mass tourism, but also the reason why they have been able to keep their culture almost intact.
For over 200 years, French Polynesia has been the archetype of the tropical paradise in the common imagination, but if you ask anyone about these islands, you can be sure you will get a lot of confusion. Tahiti, the most famous, is just an island of one of the five archipelagos that make up French Polynesia; it is also the largest and most interesting island from a historical point of view, but the images depicting enchanted landscapes and fairytale sunsets, which can often be found online, almost always refer to other islands.
There are many reasons to visit French Polynesia: enjoy its elegant resorts, scuba dive in lagoons teeming with multicolored tropical fish, enjoy the peculiar Franco-Polynesian cuisine, but above all spend a holiday of peace and relaxation in the splendor of the South Pacific.

When will your French Polynesia yacht vacation take place?
French Polynesia climate is characterized by two distinct seasons, one cooler and drier and the other hot and humid. The hot and rainy season runs from November to April, while the dry season runs from May to October. However, temperatures are very good all year round, with variations between the hottest and coldest months of just a few degrees. It is no coincidence that “cool” temperatures always mean more than 20 degrees centigrade on average.
The climate of French Polynesia is a type of oceanic climate, warm and humid, tempered by the trade winds that blow throughout the year, making the Polynesian climate pleasant all year round.
The most obvious difference between the two seasons is the rain which in the hottest period is more likely to turn into tropical storms.
The preferable months for a trip to French Polynesia are therefore the driest ones, from May to October. However, there are differences between one archipelago and another: this period is the best time to visit the archipelagos of the Society and Tuamotu, while for the Marquesas Islands the best months are those between September and November. In the archipelago of the Austral islands, it rains regularly every month of the year, but a little less between May and November. Finally, in the Gambier Islands, the slightly less rainy months are generally January, February, May, September, and October.
It goes without saying that booking a trip during the so-called high season (May – October) will result in higher rental commissions while doing so during less touristy periods can mean better conditions and discounts.
Early booking offers are also a good choice to save money. By booking in large advance you can save up to 20% on the full price.
Similarly, choosing a last-minute booking, i.e. within 3 weeks from the departure date, can be a good way to save up to 30% of the list price. However, in this case, there is generally little choice as to the type of boat and accommodation on board.
What kind of boat do you need?
According to the number of guests onboard, you will need a different kind of boat. This will highly affect the cost amount because generally, a higher kind of boat corresponds to a higher charter fee.
The type of boat you want to charter must meet your needs, both in terms of comfort and in terms of space required.
In general, there are three main types of boat, as follows:
- Motor yacht
- Catamaran
- Sail Boat
It may seem obvious, but much of the cost incurred for renting a boat (anywhere in the world) depends on the type, size, and age of the vessel you want to rent.
In general, we can say that motor yachts are the most expensive boats, followed by catamarans and sailboats. The average weekly rental price for a medium-sized catamaran is between 2,000 and 3,000 euros per day, based on its size and whether it is a power or sailing catamaran.
Finally, it is important to consider that, for the same size, a newly built boat will have a higher rental cost than one that is already dated, with price differences that can sometimes be quite significant.

Will you be sailing alone or with a crew onboard?
Deciding whether to have a crew on board and, if so, how many members, is a crucial aspect that affects the charter final cost.
The choice depends on two main factors. The first concerns whether whoever hires the boat owns a nautical license. The second is instead linked to the size of the chartered boat.
Generally, the possibility of self-steering a boat is valid for small sailboats or catamarans. This is because, as a rule, for larger sizes, brokers require a crew on board even if you are an experienced sailor (even if only a skipper).
If you do not have a skipper license or in case you do not want to be engaged in the vessel navigation, you will have to budget a fixed daily amount for a skipper and, when needed, an onboard crew who takes care of the management of the boat at sea and in port.
What will be your French Polynesia spots itinerary?
In the midst of its 5 archipelagos and its 118 atolls and islands, of which only 67 are inhabited, it is really easy to feel lost in thin air, especially considering that its territory extends for 4 million square kilometers but of which only 4,000 kilometers are not submerged by the Pacific Ocean waters. A huge space to visit, even onboard a motor yacht.
It goes without saying that even and above all a charter boat trip must take into account such vastness, especially in terms of fuel consumption and hours of navigation for traveling from one island to another and from one archipelago to another.
Put simply, the cost of your trip to French Polynesia will largely depend on your choices on the itinerary.
A trip that therefore includes “only” the famous archipelago of the Society Islands, that is the Wind and Leeward Islands, among which the most popular with tourists such as Bora Bora and Tahiti, will have a lower cost than itineraries taking into consideration to also reach other archipelagos, no less spectacular but less populated such as the archipelago of the Marquesas Islands, the archipelago of the Austral Islands, the archipelago of the Gambier Islands and the archipelago of the Tuamotu Islands.
What costs are included and what is not in the charter fee?
The price of chartering a yacht with a crew usually includes the use of the boat for the agreed period and the crew service. When renting a boat, you must always consider the supply costs, the so-called APA (advance provisioning allowance).
It is a lump sum payment that covers all of your onboard expenses during your yacht charter like fuel, ports, food, drinks, etc.). Another cost concern the VAT which is usually to be considered separately from the indicated rental cost.
