The island of Santorini is of volcanic origin and this aspect gives it a curious shape that distinguishes it, namely a horseshoe, with the caldera of the ancient volcano located right in the center. Santorini was born tens of centuries ago from an imposing and devastating volcanic eruption and what we see today is only the remaining part. The curious shape makes it one of the most beautiful and particular areas of Greece, also thanks to the breathtaking views that can be enjoyed from the edges of the caldera.

Among the most beautiful things on this island are the splendid beaches, all unique and different from each other. There are red, black, and white-gray ones depending on the material of which the surrounding rocks are made.

The peculiarity of Santorini is given by its cliffs overlooking the sea but they can be distinguished between internal and external: the internal side of the island is in fact particularly steep, with rocks over 400 meters high that overlooks the sea. The external side, on the other hand, is much gentler and the hills gradually slope towards the sea, forming splendid beaches that every summer become places sought after by thousands of boaters.

What are the main characteristics of Red Beach?

The world-famous Red Beach, or Kokkini Beach, is one of the most popular bays of Santorini and all of Greece. If you are in the surrounding area you cannot miss the opportunity to visit it, because it is an experience out of the ordinary! Suddenly it is like taking a leap to Mars, in the middle of the dunes and mountains of the red planet.

Its peculiarity is precisely the intense red color, the result of a mixture of sand and pebbles, which even more highlights the crystalline water of the sea that bathes it.

The beach is quite small and attracts many tourists every summer, eager to take a selfie or photograph the beautiful red and black slabs of lava rock that lie behind it. In front of Red Beach, there is a clear and crystalline sea, also ideal for snorkeling thanks to the presence of these rocks that make the bottom transparent.

How to reach the Red Beach in Santorini?

The Red Beach of Santorini is located in the Akrotiri area, an ancient village that has now become an interesting archeological site. The beach is exposed to the south-southwest, therefore it is set back from the main towns. Fira for example is 11.5 kilometers away, roughly the same distance from Kamari and the airport, while Perissa is slightly closer, just 10 kilometers. Oia, on the other hand, is 23 kilometers away.

For the reasons just described, the best way to reach it is certainly onboard a rental boat, with which it is possible to easily circumnavigate the island and arrive there or set sail directly from the nearby ports of Akrotiri or Fira.

Any advice? Beware of high temperatures!

By its very nature, reddish and black sand is always very, very hot, which is why you can rent deck chairs and umbrellas on the beach.

However, Red Beach is a partially equipped beach, generally only in the central periods of the season. There are no other services such as refreshment points, bars, or restaurants.

Finally, it is good to know that rock shoes to enter the water are recommended: the pebbles of Red Beach are beautiful and multicolored, but far from soft!
