One way charter itinerary in Dalmatia from Kotor to Trogir

Discover the best of charming coastal towns, medieval history, and idyllic landscapes on this one-week itinerary from Kotor (Montenegro) to Trogir (Croatia).

Day 1 -> Kotor – Dubrovnik

Still little known to international tourism, Kotor is a real pearl set in a fjord in the heart of Montenegro. It boasts a centuries-old history with evident traces left above all by the Venetian domination and it is also a beautiful discovery from a landscape point of view.

The historic center stretches out towards the sea, bordered by mighty walls that have resisted for hundreds of years. Its streets and squares are lined with elegant stone buildings and the view of the sea with the overhanging mountains of the Dinaric Alps as a frame is unique and wonderful.

The main attraction of Kotor is undoubtedly the natural context where this enchanting city is inserted, namely the Boka Kotorska (mouths of Kotor). It is a complex of basins created by deep inlets whose shape from above looks like that of three triangles with irregular sides. Narrow and long, with a jagged profile, these basins often compared to a Norwegian fjord represent the largest natural harbor on the Adriatic and one of the most enchanting places in the whole Mediterranean. They are surrounded by spectacular mountains that reach 1800 meters in height.

Another point of interest is certainly the defensive walls of Kotor which are certainly worth a visit: They wind like a stone snake visible from almost every point of the city, tight inside them. In some places the walls seem almost a natural extension of the mountain: a very fascinating effect; along the walls, the entrance doors to the city open and some imposing bastions rise.

Dubrovnik is the most renowned and elegant destination in Croatia, whose beauty enchants thousands of visitors every year, eager to learn about its interesting history and dive into the crystal clear waters it overlooks. Those who have not yet had the opportunity to visit “the pearl of the Adriatic” should do so as soon as possible because this incredible Dalmatian jewel has a lot to tell. The charm of Dubrovnik comes from its medieval and Renaissance past, which is perceived in the suggestive Old Town and above all by its mighty walls that still surround and protect it today.

The spectacular defensive walls represent its symbol and have been part of the Unesco heritage since 1979.

The heart of Dubrovnik is the Old Town, which is accessed through the Pile Gate, an imposing sixteenth-century gate that represents the main entrance to the city. Among the works not to be missed is the Rector’s Palace (or of the Princes), one of the architectural wonders of Dubrovnik that you will encounter along your walk on the Stradun, the main street of the city.

Instead, one of the most suggestive ways to get to know a city is to admire it from above. In Dubrovnik, it is possible to do this by taking the cable car to reach Mount Srd which dominates the entire city from its 405 meters height.

Day 2 -> Dubrovnik – Mljet – Lastovo

Away from the hustle and bustle of major tourism, Mijet is 72% covered with woods, which are added to beautiful vineyards, cultivated fields, and peaceful villages. That the island is an oasis of peace has been known since ancient times. According to mythology, Homer made Ulysses stop here for seven years, before resuming his journey.

The western part of the island has been declared a National Park and this has allowed the entire Mljet to maintain an uncontaminated and pure atmosphere.

The two lakes of Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero are the favorite destination for tourists. These are lakes connected to each other and to the sea by two channels. In the center of Veliko Jezero stands the Benedictine monastery built in the 12th century and remodeled several times, until it acquires its present appearance, with Renaissance and above all Baroque features. Today it houses a restaurant, as well as the beautiful church of Santa Maria. It can be reached by boat or, if desired, by swimming, but the currents are not easy and you have to be careful. All around the lakes are the paths of the natural park, which can be explored on foot or by bicycle and which makes the island a true environmental heritage.

Lastovo is an enchanting and little-known island in Croatia, which gives its name to the archipelago of the same name in Southern Dalmatia, which has now become a national park, and the second-largest group of islands and islets in the Adriatic, after the Kornati islands.

The island of Lastovo was the site of a military base and was closed to tourism until 1998, which is why today it retains its extraordinary beauty. The island is surrounded by 46 smaller islands that form the Lastovo Archipelago. According to tradition, the archipelago is said to have 46 islets, 46 churches, and 46 small agricultural valleys.

Pasadur is a small bay and village located on the western side of the island of Lastovo. It is located about 3 kilometers north of the Ubli port. The country is also where the island is connected by a bridge to the smaller, uninhabited island of Prezba. In Pasadur Bay there are two saltwater lakes that are a must-see: Velo Lago and Malo Lago.

Day 3 -> Lastovo – Korcula

47 kilometers long and a maximum of 8 kilometers wide, divided from the mainland by a narrow canal, the presumed homeland of the Italian explorer Marco Polo is a grandiose Adriatic island where forests, cultivated fields, vineyards, and olive groves blend with the millenary history of small villages, of cultural traditions and the beautiful town of Korčula. The interior is made of crops and small villages, the north coast is flat and full of natural ports while the south is divided into numerous coves and small beaches among the most fascinating of the Croatian islands.

Korčula town is located in the northeast, on a peninsula that flows into the sea. The delightful village we admire today dates back to the 15th century and is made by a tangle of palm trees, stone, and red roofs. It was built to defend itself from possible assailants, therefore it has large bastions, but also from the winds. The roads that go west are straight, to favor the mistral wind, while those to the east are curved, to block the bora.

The best beach on the island is probably that of Pupnatska Luka, protected by the rock that plunges into the sea and is surrounded by greenery. It is not very easy to reach and has no services, but for this reason, it will seem like an oasis from which to admire the islands offshore.

Day 4 -> Korcula – Vis

Among the most beautiful islands of Croatia, known for its unspoiled nature, Vis was off-limits until 1989, as a military center of the former Yugoslavia: in 1943 it was the only island that escaped the Nazi occupation of Dalmatia, and the Jugoslavian general Tito made of Monte Hum its strategic base.

Without large tourist complexes, Vis offers the best to lovers of relaxation, the beautiful sea, and historical-naturalistic suggestions.

Diving, here as in the other Croatian islands, is among the most important activities. In Vis it is possible to dive up to the wreck of an Italian ship sunk during the battle against the Austrians in 1866. To dive instead in the famous blue cave, it is necessary that the sea is not too rough and in any case, you have to rely on the guides. The interior of the island lends itself to beautiful excursions on foot, among almost untouched nature, vineyards, and the remains of ancient civilizations.

8 kilometers from Vis is the Rukavać bay, famous for its clear sea and marine fauna; the bay offers pebble beaches and cliffs and is located opposite the islet of Ravnik.

Day 5 -> Vis – Hvar

The island of Hvar is for lovers of nature, art, thanks to the magnificent town of Hvar, and fun, with a particularly active nightlife.

Beaches of Hvar are mostly rocky and are usually found in small coves, surrounded by dense pine forests which provide shade during the hot summer days. Famous for its mild climate (Hvar is known as the sunniest island in Croatia) and for its crystal clear sea, Hvar is one of the main destinations on the Adriatic. With its lush nature, fabulous beaches, and its nightlife, it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.

On the south side of the island, about 8 kilometers from the town of Hvar, is the small town of Zaraće, at the foot of which we find two bays with pebble beaches, protected by high cliffs. The town can be reached by boat from the port of Hvar. With its splendid seabed, we recommend this beach to all diving lovers.

Very close to Hvar city are the Pakleni islands, a group of twenty islands and rocks that stretch in front of the city, partly still unexplored. Thanks to its rocky seabed, the archipelago is a real paradise for underwater fishing. The most popular tourist destinations are the islets of Jerolim and Stipanska (both with nudist beaches) and the sandy Palmizana.

Finally, if you are looking for a little corner of paradise, do not miss Mekicevica. Located just 3 kilometers east of Hvar, it can be reached by boat or on foot. Mekićevica bay has two sandy beaches and one of pebbles and rocks. The water is crystal clear and wonderful turquoise color.

Day 6 -> Hvar – Brac

Brac is the largest island in central Dalmatia. It is covered with pine forests and enjoys 2700 hours of sunshine on average per year. It is karst and rocky in the center, jagged all around.

For centuries its white stone has been used and exported for grandiose constructions, from the Diocletian’s Palace in Split to the White House in Washington, while its inhabitants fought the heat of the sun managing to produce excellent wine, olives, and many other products.

Brac attracts many tourists both to Supetar and to the popular Bol, but it maintains an intimate and intimate atmosphere and is suitable for those who love nature, among bays, pine forests, and spectacular beaches.

The main attraction is Zlatni Rat, a very special beach. It stretches for about fifty meters in the middle of the sea and its tip constantly changes shape according to the wind and currents. So many people come here just to admire it, and they are not wrong. Once here, don’t forget to visit the town of Bol, which is about 10 minutes away on foot.

The city of Supetar is instead located about 50 kilometers from Bol and is the main port that connects the island to the mainland. In addition to the beaches, an attraction is the beautiful Church of the Annunciation, with valuable internal decorations. Not far away is the village of Škrip, the oldest settlement on the island, full of fascinating Roman finds and a symbol of ancient mining activity.
