Enjoy a boat journey to Cooper Island and discover one of the most exciting Virgin Island destinations!
The Caribbean by nature but disputed for centuries by a mixture of peoples, the Virgin Islands are a volcanic archipelago located east of Puerto Rico, halfway between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Today they are formally divided in two from an administrative point of view, the easternmost islands are part of the British Virgin Islands and, although retaining their autonomy, are controlled by the English Crown. The westernmost islands are instead part of the United States.
However, despite the British and American influences, the Virgin Islands still retain typical characteristics of the Caribbean way of life, such as a positive approach to life and the joy of living, linked to the calm rhythm with which the inhabitants are used to approaching all kinds of situations or problems. A real example of resilience, as demonstrated also when two hurricanes had swept away houses and entire villages in recent years. The ability not to lose heart made the Virgin Islands shine again in a short time.

How to reach the BVI’s?
To get to Cooper Island it is first necessary to understand how to get to the BVIs (British Virgin Islands) of which it is part.
Beef Island’s Terrance B. Lettsome Airport in Tortola in the British Virgin Island’s only international airport. However, no direct flights arrive here either from Europe or North America. It is, therefore, necessary to call on some of the neighboring islands such as Antigua or St. Maarten.
Once in Tortola, the capital, Road Town, is easily reachable by taxi. Your charter boat awaits you to begin your itinerary.
Tortola is the largest of the islands in the archipelago of the English overseas lands and it was named after its own Christopher Columbus. The capital, Road Town, still retains many of the nineteenth-century buildings in wood and stone that house most of the local craft shops along the entire Main Street. If you want advice, don’t miss the opportunity to visit it.
Where is Cooper Island located in the archipelago?
This little wonder of the British Virgin Islands is located between Ginger Island and Salt Island, (both completely uninhabited), just in front of and a short distance from Tortola (the largest island in the archipelago).

What are its main attractions?
Although small in size, Cooper Island is one of the most popular with sailors from all over the world. About thirty buoys are installed here, where it is possible to park for a fee with boats up to 60 feet in length. Being very close to Tortola, it is often considered the first stop for those who decide to take a tour of the British Virgin Islands.
Cooper Island is a popular destination, especially for diving enthusiasts due to its proximity to some of the most famous diving sites. A short distance from the island is for example “The Rhone”, a famous diving spot that takes its name from the wreck of the British Crown steamship “RMS Rhone” which sank in 1867 due to a strong storm off the coast of Salt Island. Unmissable experience if you are an underwater world lover!
Other boats have been deliberately sunk in the surrounding area over the years, to create special sites to be explored with oxygen cylinders and snorkels.
If you prefer other water sports, on the island you can rent paddleboards and kayaks or take sailing lessons or rent a dinghy.
This area is also the most frequented by dolphins and you often come across them while swimming in the waters off Cooper Island.

The island is also suitable for less sporty people
On the island, there is one of the best restaurants in the BVIs serving international and Caribbean cuisine. Open for lunch and dinner every day, it offers a terrace overlooking the sea, perfect for relaxing while enjoying one of the house cocktails comfortably seated on a sofa.
An interesting place to visit on Cooper Island is the Rum Bar, where you can try a wide range of Rums from all over the world. Next to the rum bar, there is also a coffee shop, where you can sip an excellent espresso or enjoy an ice cream, something quite rare in this corner of the world.
Cooper Island, the green island par excellence
The ecological and nature-conscious soul of the British Virgin Islands is perfectly summarized on Cooper Island. After the disastrous hurricane that destroyed not only the island resort but also a large part of the forest and gardens in 2017, the inhabitants wasted no time in first rebuilding the marina and the resort but returning to immerse it in a green oasis where you can see the hand of botanists and architects of the green. There are countless cultivated species: wild tamarind, fragrant frangipani, terebinth shrubs, cacti, dwarf banana trees, and white cedar trees. The pride of the island is the botanical garden created by the Cooper Island Beach Club, truly unique for its floral species.
